4.3 Be My Eyes is an amazing app that connects blind and low-vision people with volunteer helpers from around the world. Through the app, users can request help with everyday tasks like reading a label, finding an item in a store, or checking the time. Volunteers can then provide assistance through live video chat.
Be My Eyes was founded in 2015 by Hans Jørgen Wiberg and Christy Lynn Evans. The idea for the app came about when Hans Jørgen, who is himself visually impaired, realized that many simple tasks could be made much easier with the help of a sighted person.
Since its launch, Be My Eyes has helped thousands of people all over the world. It's an incredibly useful tool for those who are blind or low-vision, and it's also a great way for volunteers to give back and make a difference in someone else's life.
Features & Highlights
Be My Eyes is an innovative app designed to connect visually impaired individuals with sighted volunteers via live video calls. Here are some standout features that make this app truly invaluable:
Real Experience Using Be My Eyes
Application Scenarios
Using Be My Eyes has become a part of my daily routine, especially when I'm out and about. One memorable scenario was when I was trying to find my way through a busy shopping mall. The layout was confusing, and I had trouble locating a specific store. I opened the app, connected with a volunteer, and within moments, they guided me through the maze of shops, describing landmarks and helping me navigate correctly. Another instance was during a cooking session at home. I wanted to ensure that the ingredients I was using were fresh, and I called a volunteer to help me read labels and check the condition of my vegetables. Their quick assistance made the process smooth and enjoyable.
User Experience
The user interface of Be My Eyes is incredibly intuitive. From the moment I downloaded the app, I found the layout to be straightforward and user-friendly. The main screen features a prominent button to initiate a call, making it easy to access help in just a few taps. The video quality during calls is impressive, allowing volunteers to see everything clearly. I also appreciated the option to leave feedback after each call, which made me feel valued as a user. Overall, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive; the app functions seamlessly, and the volunteers are consistently friendly and knowledgeable.
Pricing
Be My Eyes is completely free to use, which is one of its most appealing aspects. There are no hidden fees or subscription models, allowing everyone, regardless of their economic situation, to access this vital service. The app is funded through donations and partnerships, ensuring that it remains sustainable while providing invaluable assistance to the visually impaired community.
Updates & Support
The developers of Be My Eyes are committed to continuous improvement, regularly updating the app to enhance functionality and user experience. I’ve noticed updates that improve video quality and add new features, which show the team's dedication to user feedback. Additionally, their support team is responsive and helpful, always ready to assist with any questions or concerns I might have. This level of support instills confidence in the app as a reliable tool for assistance.
Security & Privacy Review
As a user of Be My Eyes, I have given considerable thought to the app's security and privacy features. Available on both the App Store and Google Play, the app is designed with user safety in mind. During registration, users are required to provide basic information, but no sensitive personal data is needed, which is reassuring. The app does not feature advertisements, and there is a clear commitment to protecting user data; it does not engage in tracking behavior that could compromise privacy. This transparency is crucial for American users who prioritize their online security, making Be My Eyes a trustworthy choice for those seeking assistance.

Update 2025, I've only gotten 5 calls in over 5 years. it's great because that means there is no lack of volunteers. 2023 STILL a awesome app to help others. This is probably the best idea for an app. I like to help people and this app let's me do that and selfishly I get that feel good feeling. I didn't expect a call right away but I got one in 3 days. The app could use some simple changes. Like changing the notification sound. I've missed two calls for help. But overall this is decent

I'm only giving 5 stars up there because it's a good idea and probably helps a bunch of people.... but I've gotten 3 calls and it's so hard to answer!! the notification pops up someone is calling but you can click on it at all you have to go to the app and then I hit the green answer button in the app 10 times and it always gets answered by someone else. I wish the notification would pop up and you could just tap answer or at least take you to the app!!!

I love being able to lend a hand. Just like the instructional video says, you'll get notifications like a phone call, from those who need help. I have gotten 6 calls in 3 years for help with tasks from adjusting the thermostat, identifying medication or documents, and grabbing the right outfit piece. it is an amazing idea, and it notifys multiple people at one time too, so you dont have to feel bad if you can't answer, or didnt hear/feel it ring/vibrate.

A few tips for my fellow helpers- -When you are getting a call, tap the green "answer call" button rapidly, and it will pick it up quicker and easier than if you only tapped once. -If you are having trouble with clarity of text or pixilated video, use the camera feature in the lower left-hand corner to take a picture of the item, and all the text will be perfectly clear! What an amazingly helpful app!

Truly an incredible use of technology. I've had the app since it launched in 2017 & I've had the pleasure of answering about 5 calls as a volunteer. I've received more calls than that but I didn't always answer quick enough so the calls went to someone else. I've helped people read instructions, identify colors, & give directions. The calls are usually quick but they are always the highlight of my day. It feels good to help others & reminds me to be grateful for things I often take for granted.
