Citizen is a mobile app that provides users with real-time crime and safety alerts. The app is available for free on iOS and Android devices.

Citizen was created in 2016 by Andrew Frame, Jeff Seibert, and Alexey Gavrilov. The app was designed to provide users with information about crimes and safety hazards in their area in real-time. Citizen has received positive reviews from both users and critics alike.

The app is simple to use; after opening the app, users are presented with a map of their current location. Crimes and safety hazards are represented by icons on the map; when clicked, more information about the incident is displayed. Users can also view a feed of recent incidents in their area, as well as filter the feed by crime type.

Citizen is a valuable tool for keeping people safe and informed about crimes and safety hazards in their area. The app is easy to use and provides accurate, up-to-date information.

Features & Highlights

The Citizen: Local Safety Alerts app is designed to keep users informed about safety issues in their vicinity. Its features are not only informative but also engaging, providing a sense of community awareness and personal safety. Here are some key highlights that make this app stand out:

  • Real-Time Alerts: Receive immediate notifications about emergencies in your area. For instance, if there's a reported fire or police activity nearby, the app sends an alert to ensure you're aware and can take necessary precautions.
  • Incident Mapping: View incidents on a live map to understand what's happening around you. I remember one evening when I was planning to walk home late. The app showed a recent car accident nearby, prompting me to choose a different route for safety.
  • Community Engagement: Connect with other users and share information regarding local safety issues. I once spotted a suspicious vehicle in my neighborhood and shared the information through the app. The response from the community was immediate and reassuring.
  • Safety Resources: Access various resources, including emergency contacts and safety tips. During a recent storm, I utilized the app to find emergency shelters listed in my area, which was invaluable.

Real Experience Using Citizen: Local Safety Alerts

Application Scenarios

As a frequent urban commuter, I often find myself in situations where safety information is crucial. One day, while waiting for the subway, I received a notification through the Citizen app about a police chase occurring a few blocks away. The alert provided not only the location but also advice to avoid the area. This timely warning allowed me to adjust my route, ensuring I stayed safe while commuting. Additionally, during the recent protests in my city, the app kept me updated on road closures and identified safe zones if I needed to navigate around the crowds.

User Experience

The UI of the Citizen app is both intuitive and user-friendly. Upon opening, I was greeted with a clean layout that featured a map at the center, displaying various incidents in real-time. The app's navigation is straightforward; I easily accessed alerts, community posts, and safety resources without feeling overwhelmed. Each alert includes a brief description, timestamp, and location, which I found very helpful. The performance is smooth, with quick load times, and notifications appear instantly, which is critical during emergencies. Overall, my experience with the app has been positive, as it not only keeps me informed but also provides peace of mind in my day-to-day activities.

Pricing

Citizen: Local Safety Alerts is free to download and use, which is a significant advantage. The app operates on a freemium model, meaning that while the core features are available at no cost, there may be options for premium features in the future. However, I find the free version quite comprehensive, covering all essential safety alerts and community interactions without any upfront cost.

Updates & Support

The developers of Citizen are proactive in releasing updates, ensuring that the app runs smoothly and incorporates user feedback. I’ve noticed regular updates that enhance functionality and introduce new features, which is reassuring. Additionally, their support system is responsive; I once had a query about an alert I received, and their customer service team replied promptly, addressing my concerns effectively. This level of support enhances the overall user experience and builds trust in the app.

Security & Privacy Review

As an American user, security and privacy are paramount when using apps like Citizen. The app is available on both the App Store and Google Play, where it has received positive reviews for its functionality and safety features. When registering, I was required to provide minimal personal information, which is essential for receiving localized alerts. This approach respects user privacy while ensuring that alerts are relevant to my area.

One of my concerns was about ads or tracking behavior. Fortunately, Citizen does not bombard users with ads, which I appreciate. However, it is essential to note that the app may collect data to improve its services and provide personalized alerts. The privacy policy is transparent about data usage, and I felt comfortable knowing I could access the settings to manage my privacy preferences. Overall, Citizen strikes a good balance between functionality and user privacy, making it a trustworthy app for staying informed about local safety issues.

I gave it two stars originally and find it even worse today. It is sorta okay to let you know if something going on around you. But good luck figuring out where because their mapping is horrible. Who uses highway names instead of their designated numbers? Also, notifications start to tell you something and get cut off. Touch to see more and it takes it away completely. I wouldn't pay two cents for this app much less the prices they want.

App has gone downhill. Too much pressure to subscribe, and free features don't work reliably enough to instill confidence that premium would be any better. Location doesn't update consistently. Keeps giving alerts for things nowhere near where I am. When I open the app, I have to get through ads to subscribe and then can't find current, nearby incidents very easily.

Update 11.7.23: Not gonna lie... it's feeling more like next door the longer I use it: Lost pets are everywhere. and it locks you out of disabling notification for the minor stuff unless you go premium. Received a notification that I couldn't even find in the app, Go figure.. Pretty sure it was a come for the click. Original review: I totally get it.. Y'all got to make money. Public safety is one thing but greed is another. I keep it just for the historical aspect. Too bad live ain't worth it.

App is buggy. Unable to search the incidents that happened nearby (despite getting a notification about it). Search button and a few other action links are not working, and overall the app went downhill. I just cancelled the premium subscription too. Free subscription became very limited, so I subscribed for premium for a year, but it was a waste of money!

I love the app in the beginning and I even had bought the free trial which was I think it was $3.99 for 3 months after those months that I paid I had canceled it so it wouldn't charge me the regular price which is like five something a month. so now canceled for like the past 6 months and under the Play Store subscriptions I canceled and I canceled through my PayPal which was the source of payment they're still trying to charge me every month. you guys keep trying to hit my PayPal with the charg
